What is Mare Street South?
On the edge of Hackney lies Mare Street South - a special place of production, culture, craft, entrepreneurship, caring and graft.
It’s home to England’s oldest Hospice and a revered artist community. It is bounded by Westgate Street and the Regent’s Canal and contains 3 conservation areas: Beck Road, Broadway Market and Regent’s Canal. At its centre stands the large Ash Grove Bus Station and the Weaver Line of the London overground railway.
It reflects London in its diversity and charm.
We are under threat
In this unique and special neighbourhood, Hackney Council want to impose three massve developments that will fundamentally change the nature of the area.
Each of these developments (in their current forms) are opposed by the many local residents and businesses. We have created this site to show how each individual development will impact its immediate locality, and how all three together will be massively detrimental to Mare Street South as a community.
WE ARE NOT AGAINST NEW DEVELOPMENT
We just want local people’s voices to be heard about what is being proposed and built. We want co-production of all three sites in a collaborative way that works for both the people and busineses of Mare Street South.
The three developments are:
1. 79-85 Mare Street; 1a And 350 Bocking Street, London, E8 4RG (impacting Beck Road)
2. Ash Grove Bus Station, E8 4RH
3. 51-61 Mare Street (current site of 5 Points Brewery), E8 4RP
Local residents and businesses want a joined-up consultation considering all three potential developments and their combined impact on our neighbourhood.
We want to co-design something that will work for everyone with good housing, sustainable green spaces and low-cost workspaces and commercial units.
